Vampires, vampires and vampires.

Two days late! What a jerk! Sorry, I’ve been busy preparing for Round 2 of The Bamboozle Break Contest this Saturday, March 31st at Ollie’s Point in Amityville, NY. It would mean the world to us if you guys could all come out and support! We really want to play with Jon Bon!

LONG LIVE THIS GOOD ROBOT

I’m in a great mood! Must be all the new comics! I know everyone is talking about Avengers VS X-men, but to be honest, the only Marvel book I’ve read since The Runaways is Moon Knight and I’m a little scared. Moon Knight, by the way, only has one more issue left at which point I will be Marvel-less once again. I’ve decided to try to just jump in. If you’re a marvel reader and you see something I might not get, help me out!! Marvel, I’ve ignored you long enough.

TOP 5 NEW COMICS, all of which happen to have Vampires in them… Totally not on purpose, I don’t even really like vampires, but these vampires are fucking awesome!):

American Vampire #25

20120330-111556.jpg
DC Vertigo: Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque
Huge issue! Loved every last panel! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The New Deadwardians #1

20120330-111755.jpg
DC Vertigo: Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard
Just an incredibly solid 1st issue! Amazing usage of 20 pages. Great pacing and yet I feel like I learned so much about every character and the world they are living in. Basically, the zombie apocalypse has occurred and to save themselves, the upper class has taken “The Cure” (nothing to do with Robert Smith) and have voluntarily become vampires. So the lower class is zombies, middle class are human and the upper, vampires. The main character is a vampires who seems to miss being human. He is also the last homicide detective due to total lack of homicides that occur that aren’t just zombie attacks on humans. I learned all of that, and they set up a murder mystery and managed to be less wordy than i’m being here! I honestly can’t say enough good things about it. Please do yourself a favor and check it out!

I, Vampire #7

20120330-112315.jpg
DC Comics: Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andrea Sorrentino

Justice League Dark #7

The Unwritten #35.5

20120330-112717.jpg
DC Vertigo: Mike Carey and Peter Gross

HOLY CRAP!! I think that’s the first time ever that every book in the top five came from DC!

Light week, my ass!

Holy shit! 29 books this week! I’m starting to feel it… Of those 29 books, 8 of them are #1’s, so it’s just getting worse. My wallet has been yelling at me. I have a serious problem… Also my wallet can talk.
Now i’m going to justify all of those #1’s!
Here’s what I’m trying out:

Rebel Blood #1 (I’m reading pretty much everything image is putting out right now, what’s one more?)

Hoax Hunters #0 (technically, this is not a #1)

-Ragemoor #1 (don’t know anything about this one… Sweet cover though!)

Rocketeer Adventures 2 #1 (is this technically a #1? More like #5, besides, it’s the fucking rocketeer! Consider this purchase justified!)

The Secret History of D.B. Cooper #1(technically, this came out last week.)

And the other 3 #1’s are in my top 5. Spoilers!

I’m also definitely sticking with No Place Like Home (#2 out today), Prophet #23 (#3), and Memorial (#4 today). All great stuff!!

I just read all of that back. The problem isn’t that I’m trying out all of these new series. In fact, all of my favorite comics right now are independent, creator owned books. The problem is that I’m still reading Green Arrow. Stop it.

Seriously though, I try to only talk about things I like on here. I like to keep things positive. I love comics. I’m not the guy who says that and then spends all of their time bitching about them. Some of the greatest stories ever told are happening now… In comics. Right under the general public’s noses. Do the world a favor and give someone you love a comic book today.

Let’s do the Pulls!

I believe in Brian K. Vaughan!! We’ve missed you!!

Happy Pi Day Everybody! What a great day for comics! 25 Books this week! If all that came out today was Saga and Locke & Key it would still be one of the best days ever! But we’ve also got the highly anticipated second issues of Thief of Thieves and Peter Panzerfaust, Joshua Hale Fialkov’s third installment of his awesome Doctor Who story, new stuff from Vertigo and the conclusion of the first mini series of The Strange Talents of Luther Strode by Justin Jordan (I think we’re going to be seeing a lot from this guy soon! Really great stuff!

SAGA seems to be the word today around the #comicmarket and for all kinds of good reasons! Brian K. Vaughan’s return to comics is met with wide open arms! As a huge fan of his work myself,

20120314-172434.jpg
(can you tell?) I often complain that he doesn’t write more comics, but after reading the first issue of Saga, I’m reminded just how special his writing is. He’s not writing just to write. His dialog flows so beautifully and is so powerful. Nothing in a Brian K. Vaughan book ever feels fake or half-assed, he commits whole heartily to the character’s development and the worlds he creates for them. I
believe in comic books. I believe in Brian K. Vaughan.

Having said all of that, I would read the shit out of this book with or without Vaughan, because Fiona Staple’s art is simply stunning! This is the first stuff I’ve seen of hers and I’m gonna go ahead and call myself a fan! The character designs are insane and wonderful. The colors are just gorgeous. I can’t wait to turn the page to see what’s next. She really knows how to show facial expression. I truly believed every emotion. That first scene! Are you kidding me?! Simply beautiful! I was immediately involved in their joy and fear of being new parents. Not to mention, Alana’s face when Marko starts chewing through the umbilical chord… perfect!

20120317-133952.jpg
My only complaint is that she works digitally, and ONLY because I want to buy the original art for every single page. Oh well, maybe she’ll do some prints or something so I can throw my money at her.

I know I say it all the time, but I love that Image Comics is taking so many chances with creator owned books that may not always be considered mainstream. It’s exciting not always knowing what to expect, and I’m so rarely disappointed by new titles they’ve been putting out. Keep doing what you are doing. I will keep buying them. That’s a promise.

One last thing about this book before I get into the top 5 pulls.
44 PAGES! NOT ONE FUCKING AD! $2.99! Well done Image Comics. Well done all around.

Magic, Comics, and Bigotry! Oh My!!

Annyong!!

Recently, I was tweeting about looking for an artist to draw me a TARDIS for a tattoo I want to get. Technology is incredible! Five minutes later I was chatting with a total stranger. He asked about what I was wearing and everything got a bit weird… five minutes after that, this guy Sean Von Gorman tweets at me and we work out that, being an artist and all, he is going to draw and send me a Tardis, and I am going to, in turn, send him a bit of American currency… everyone wins! Haven’t gotten the tattoo yet, but the art came in the mail yesterday and it’s great!
Check it out!
20120228-204635.jpg
I just can’t wait to put it on my body for forever and ever.
Gorman and I got to talking about music, art and comics in general and he eventually sent me an advanced copy of his comic, The Secret Adventures of Houdini.
20120229-191627.jpg
I read it twice. The first time, I found it fun and enjoyable with great art. The second time however, I picked up on all of these wonderful new elements of storytelling I somehow missed the first time. One of my favorite scenes was when Houdini is putting on make up to cover his bumps and bruises from that night’s secret escapades hiding them from his wife? His public? Always in character, always playing a part, always “The Master of Disguise”!
Anyway, lots of action, tons of fun! Definitely check it out! Tell your local store to order it, and/or you can order copies here:
The Secret Adventures of Houdini.

To promote the release of the first issue today, Gorman spent all day handcuffed to a pole in front of Forbidden Planet Comics in New York until all the issues are sold out. I love stuff like this!! Last we checked in with Gorman, it’s getting dark and it’s still raining… GOOD LUCK OUT THERE SEAN!!20120229-191345.jpg

Check out his band: Super Secret Side Project (gonna have to get some shows going with them and This Good Robot soon!)

Notable from last week (not in my top 5:

Very excited about the Justice League Dark / I, Vampire crossover that’s coming up. A little upset that I read Justice League dark first this week. Spoilers.

Morning Glories #16: I love time travel and 32 ad-free pages + a preview for 2.99!! I love you Image comics!
