The Best Day Ever!! Very late Top 5 pulls

So, I’m late for the first time since starting my top 5’s. I started writing a post for Wednesday on Tuesday night and based on what was coming out, the post was entitled, “The Best Day Ever!!”. Then Wednesday happened and for me, it was one of the worst days I’ve ever had. But at least there were comics. Great comics. Most of my favorites in fact. I’d been in a bad mood since and made a point not to read any of my books for fear that my mood would ruin my favorite things. Meanwhile, the comics probably would have helped. Anyway, I’m sorry for posting late.
I know that my top 5’s tend to be a bit repetitive, and I’m working on it, but really, it shouldn’t be my responsibility. On average I pick up 20 – 30 books a week and try to give most everything a fighting chance. If something is awesome, or of a publisher or creative team has me excited to check something out, it’ll be in my top 5.

Since I’m late posting late, I’m gonna do a little more than usual. I’d like to start doing this from now on when it’s called for. There were some books from last week that were not in my top 5, but I thought were worth mentioning.

Rachel Rising #5 by Terry Moore

20120203-145957.jpg
The scene where she describes waking up underground was fucking intense!

And The Flash #5 by Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato

20120203-150259.jpg
This has been one of my favorites of the New 52’s and all of the sudden I like it even more… time travel. Plus, the art continues to be some of the best in comics right now. definitely go check out these two books.

Moving on!
This is the most exciting thing that’s come out so far this year! I’ve only had a chance to flip through it so far… (let’s go Amazon! Fuck! I hate you! But nobody can compete with your prices! Gahhhww! Send the damn thing already!)

MADMAN 20TH ANNIVERSARY MONSTER!!

20120203-151155.jpg
This thing is fucking huge!!!!! Seriously. 11 x 17 Hardcover and features art and stories by… Well… everyone.

As you can see,

20120203-151824.jpg

20120203-151903.jpg

20120203-151938.jpg
I’m a Madman fan.
(totally unnecessary brag note: figure in the back right of the display case was made by a company in France, numbered #1 of 100, signed by Mike Allred and is actually 1 of a kind from what I’m told… Whatever, No big deal.)
What is a big deal is BRAND NEW MADMAN STORIES! This book is overflowing with them. If you’ve never read any Madman, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s what got me into comics in the first place and continues to be the most fun I’ve ever had with comics.

Without Madman in my life… This Top 5 may never have existed (nice dramatic segue):

IT’S BIGGER ON THE INSIDE! New comics! Top 5 Pulls!

One of my favorite writers, Joshua Hale Fialkov, is writing Doctor Who comics!! The first of his 4 issue run came out today and to celebrate… I bought myself another Tardis.

20120111-201714.jpg
This one is life sized. I’ve been needing a life sized Tardis for a while now so I’m really glad I finally took care of that. On that note… The Pulls.

Doctor motherfucking Who #13!!!!!!!!!! (my apologies, my iPhone is telling me now that “motherfucking is not a word. We do not condone the use of poor spelling or bad grammar on this motherfucking blog.)

According to this Top 5, I seem to really be into what’s happening over at Image Comics these days. I couldn’t fit The Last of the Greats in there, but figured I already had his Who book in the top spot and went with Invincible instead. I also picked up 8 “New 52” books, of which I’m especially excited for Frankenstein: Agent of Shade by Jeff Lemire and I’ve been enjoying Green Lantern by Geoff Johns.

This Good Robot has 2 shows this weekend!! Friday in Rocky Point, NY and Sunday at Webster Hall in NYC with Patent Pending (Contact me here or on twitter for tickets!!!) For more info: THISGOODROBOT.COM

Good talk. See you out there.

HOLY CRAP!! First pulls of the new year! We’ve got monsters, some comic history and I give my brother Joe what he really needs for Christmas! Oh! And pulls! Don’t forget the pulls! 5 of em!

I’ve got a nice, yet not too intimidating stack in front of me. I promised you monsters… Looks like we’ve got one on the cover of Green Arrow and I, Zombie is filled with just about every kind you can think of.

20120104-161509.jpg
There shall be more!!

Got some #1’s I’m excited to check out including Fatale by Brubaker and Phillips and Ferals by Lapham (both of which seem to have monsters on the cover)

20120104-154118.jpg

Onto the Pulls!!! (…and probably more monsters.)

Swamp Thing #5 (Monsters.)

20120104-155136.jpg

20120104-160114.jpg
DC Vertigo: Jeff Lemire

Action Comics #5 (He’s an alien, not a monster.)

20120104-160327.jpg
DC Comics: Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert

Speaking of Grant Morrison, check this shit out! I got these for my brother-in-law for Christmas:

20120104-162059.jpg Correct me if I’m wrong, but these are the first things Grant Morrison ever had published. I found out about these while reading Morrison’s new book, Supergods: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human

20120104-165635.jpgGreat book by the way! Definitely check it out if you are interested in the history of comics. Anyway, there are 4 total, I was only able to find two of them. He’s got a 5 or so page story in each. Here’s what makes them really cool:

20120104-162609.jpg
I’m pretty sure this is the only thing he ever published that he wrote and drew himself. I wasn’t expecting much from the art, but he’s actually really good! Here are some random pages:

20120104-162727.jpg

20120104-162949.jpg

20120104-163038.jpg

20120104-163051.jpg

Right?!
I didn’t get a chance to read them before gifting them. Is it tacky to borrow something you gave as a gift? If so, there is no way I would have gotten my brother Rob those Simpsons DVDs this year… Fuck that guy.

And I most definitely would not have given my brother Joe 11 Copies of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson’s When The Game Was Ours with Jackie Macmullan.

20120104-164816.jpg

I gave them to him one by one all addressed from different members of the family. My favorite was the one I managed to get into a much smaller box and addressed from his fiancé… It couldn’t possibly be… Oh shit! It is! Damn! I wish I had a picture of that! That particular copy isn’t exactly readable anymore…

Well, this was fun! Until next week! Be sure to let me know if I missed any monsters!!

“Keys… That do stuff.” New Comic Day Top 5 Pulls (6)

Finally! It’s Wednesday! Just got home from the comic shop and I couldn’t be more excited for a brand new issue of Locke & Key. I can’t believe there are only 10 left. If you aren’t reading Locke & Key, I suggest you start. All i want to do is talk about it! It’s the perfect comic, even for people who don’t read comics. Stuff like this doesn’t come around too often. It’s special. It’s important. Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez bring us one of the most unique and well executed stories in the comic world. Keys… that do stuff. Why didn’t I think of that? Read Locke & Key.

20111214-195641.jpg
If you are like me, then you just can’t get enough Locke & Key. Check out Skelton Crew Studios where you can get a Head Key of your own! Once you get it, open the heads of all your friends, drop in the first four trades. This way you’ll have more people to talk to about this incredible book.

20111214-195606.jpg
I’m not sure what the latest news on the Locke & Key pilot episode is, but if you find yourself with a chance to see it, FUCKING DO IT! I was fortunate enough to see it at the New York Comic Con in October, and it was great! The kid who plays Bode totally stole the show! It’ll be a real shame if it doesn’t get picked up, could have been a great series.

Oh right! And there were totally other new comics out today too!

MAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!

Here’s the mail! It never fails! It makes me want to wag my tail! When it comes I wanna wail MAAAAAIIIIIIILLLLLL!!!! Ok I’m done! Sorry about that, I’m just excited!
There is almost nothing better than getting a new page in the mail. This came this weekend! It’s the original art for Preacher issue #3, page 1.

20111210-160448.jpg

20111210-160558.jpg

20111210-160655.jpg
This issue came out in June 1995 which isn’t all that long ago, and yet it’s amazing how different the process was. All of the dialog bubbles were added afterwards and the copyright is taped to the bottom. These are all things that now would take place on a computer. I think of all the modern comic pages i own, maybe 3 of them have the dialog on the original art. Seeing the page this way in person is like getting a peak behind the curtain, it’s really an extraordinary thing seeing every pen stroke and exactly what goes into the whole production of just one page. I love all the tiny imperfections that tell you a human being created this beautiful thing.

20111211-112954.jpg There is one dialog bubble that he must have changed the words or he maybe messed up on the first time. You can see an “A” and a “S” covered up by new dialog. I wish I could see what’s under it, I tried holding a light up and looking through the back, but again, all I can make out is an “A” and a “S”. oh well, guess we’ll never know and I’m sure it’s covered for good reasons and not nearly as interesting as I think it is.

My other favorite thing about this page is that I’ve made a new friend in the process. I purchased the page from a guy named Claudio on Comic Art Fans. Claudio was kind enough to let me pay off the page over… Well… however the fuck long it would take. He was very patient and we ended up going back and forth through emails for the last 4 months or so. Now here I am with my page and Claudio with his money and we’re still geeking out about comics and art and whatever else.
Basically, I just love the entire comic community. It’s a place where i feel like i belong. I like that the Internet makes it possible for us to find other people who are just like us and make these connections. This page is now a reminder of all of that and why I’m a part of it.

This is the second Preacher page I’ve added to my collection. In September, I picked up page 10 from the very first issue. I still need to get something with the three main characters, but for now, this is one of my most prized possessions, though I still don’t quite own it outright, but one day American Express, one day, it will be mine!!

20111210-161043.jpg

note: IF YOU HAVE NOT READ PREACHER BY GARTH ENNIS AND STEVE DILLON, WHAT THE SHIT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?! FUCKING DO IT YOU CRAZY ASSHOLE!!!… I’m talking to you, Terence.

ENJOY, SEE YOU WEDNESDAY!
